How to Choose the Best Ethernet Cable

Ethernet Cable Types
Let’s simplify and talk about the main network cable standards: Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a.
Cat5 – up to 100Mb / s and 100 meters.
Older and slower, standard Cat5 network cables can support transfer rates between 10Mbps and 100Mbps. In some cases, they can reach 1 Gigabit / second but in very short distances. It is already out of date, it is used in some cases of the home network.
Cat5e – 1,000 Mbps, 100 meters.
Although physically very similar to Cat5, Cat5e adheres to the highest standards. The letter “E” stands for “improved.” Cat5e is a version with less noise and therefore of better quality. Since it can easily achieve a transfer speed of 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps) at a distance of up to 100 meters, this type is currently considered the best option in terms of cost-effectiveness. That is why it has almost completely replaced its predecessor.
Cat6 – Up to 10 Gbps, 50 and 100 meters, 250 Mhz.
With a slightly different structure from the previous type, and even better, it supports speeds of up to 10 Gigabits and has less interference. This type of wiring is hardly found in domestic cases. Even more so because in situations of short distances (10 meters, for example), there is little interference and inferior quality cables.

It is also important to clarify that in cases of need for a constant speed range of 10 Gbps, the cable should not be more than 50 meters away, because the further away, the worse the performance.
Cat6a – Up to 10 Gbps, 100 meters, 500 Mhz.
It supports a frequency bandwidth of up to 500Mhz, twice that of Cat6, and can also support 10Gbps. However, unlike the previous cabling, Cat6 supports 10 Gigabit / s with a cable of up to 100 meters.
